You may have noticed that it has been awhile since my last blog. Like most of you, I was busy dealing with the holidays. Unlike most of you, I actually was an elf, but that’s another story. Today I share with you some of the useless bits of information that I’ve managed to gather over the last couple of months. Feel free to share.
The peanut-head bug lives in South America and carries its stomach in its head, a fact Continue Reading »

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the recording artist Jennifer Armstrong. To this day, her “I Can Be Me” cd is the cd I have used most often in story time, and it’s the one about which I have received the most inquiries. I have used her “Hello” song so many times that I can now say hello in many different languages (although, admittedly, I may have to sing through the song first as I still do with Continue Reading »

I have read to my children since they were born, and I’ve done so as much for my own joy as for theirs. As they’ve grown, I have less opportunities to do so, although I’m quick to take advantage when given the chance (i.e. scary stories on camping trips). Currently, a trend has developed Continue Reading »

Happily residing in the children’s department of my library are several familiar characters and animals that welcome children each day. Barney is still a particular favorite as is evident in the number of times he is removed from his place on the shelf to keep a child company during his/her visit. One young lady asked if she could read a book to Barney. When I gave my enthusiastic consent, she then found Continue Reading »

Whether or not we are willing to admit it, most of us have Googled our names to see what hits we would get. The results can range from comical to downright humbling. Few of us, however, have been so bold as the young boy who recently stopped by the library. His mother found him on the computer catalog diligently reviewing his results. When she asked him what subject he was looking for, he admitted Continue Reading »

During storytime one morning, I overheard two parents discussing various ideas on how to deal with uncooperative or disobedient children. One parent said, “When my son is uncooperative, I just tell him we won’t go to Continue Reading »

If you want book suggestions for your child based on their interests and reading level, try the website Book Adventure http://www.bookadventure.com/. If you set up a free account for your child, he/she can even take quizzes on some of the books. I took the quiz based on Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar
, and I was Continue Reading »

Do you want the latest, most up-to-date, country information for your student’s report? The best site I’ve found is the CIA’s World Factbook https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/ As of this posting, the site was last updated on August 7, 2008. And, here’s the best part: Continue Reading »

Having conversations with children is one of the best aspects of this job. The following conversation is a terrific example of why this is so. A child I recognized as one I had helped select picture books about police officers was back again, so I asked him how he liked the books. Referring to Sherman Crunchley
, he said, and I quote, Continue Reading »

I saw a sign years ago that I would like to put up at the library. It states “Poor Planning on Your Part Does Not Constitute an Emergency on Our Part.” Such a sign would have been handy the other day when a patron came in requesting, as she put it, books about reading, math, social sciences, and biology. As my assistant worked to find books fitting this very generic description, the patron indicated that she was really in a hurry because Continue Reading »
