Audiobook Review: Ties That Bind by Dave Isay and StoryCorps

February 11, 2014 by Allie

Ties That Bind by StoryCorpsWhat is StoryCorps?
StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 50,000 interviews from more than 80,000 participants. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition and on StoryCorps’ Listen Page.

Has anyone ever told you a story about his/her life that surprised you, touched you, or made you laugh-out loud? The stories on the CD Ties That Bind do all that and then some.

My review: 4 of 5 stars

Sounds boring! Those were my husband’s exact words when I pulled out this CD to listen to on a trip into Atlanta one day. Withing minutes with both had tears in our eyes and smiles on our faces (yes, both at the same time) and we were entranced. The stories shared on this CD and collected by StoryCorps are so moving, so HUMAN that the listener feels they are having a shared experience. It’s oral history about the rest of us. Not the rich and famous. Just you and me and everyone. We all have a story to tell, and we all deserve to be heard.
