Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is about an elementary school student with attention-deficit disorder. Joey tries very, very hard to follow the rules, but between his disorder and his vivid imagination, he finds staying out of trouble to be quite difficult (often with humorous results). The author of the Joey Pigza books, Jack Gantos, does a phenomenal job of reaching into Joey’s head and revealing the complex processes that occur there. The reader cannot help but love Joey for his big heart and root for him to succeed. I recommend this book as one to share with fourth-graders and up as a way of promoting understanding and compassion. Many students, not just those with ADHD, will find that they can relate to Joey and his struggle to fit in and succeed. This book is a National Book Award Finalist as well as an ALA Notable Book.
