My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Listened to this on a long trip to Missouri. It lasted nearly the whole way, and did not succeed in making our trip feel any shorter. My husband and I enjoyed the first few chapters well enough. We even had a few laughs. Then the preaching started. A long, rambling sermon of sorts that tried to cover everything and was rife with cliche in the bargain. The reader was dull or maybe it was the content she was reading…both I’d say. The only redeeming quality in this book was Fannie Flagg’s signature sense of humor. It wasn’t enough, not nearly, to make the ten hour long sermon feel any less preachy. We were never so happy as to when the book was over, and that was only partly due to having finally reached our destination. Our book club selected this to discuss in December, and I’m dreading the discussion. I can’t imagine how one can discuss this book without getting into religion and politics, both topics that are best avoided in book club meetings. I don’t recommend this book, even for Fannie Flagg fans (of which I am one). Or was.
