The Spiderwick Chronicles

January 1, 2008 by Daniel age 11

The Spiderwick Chronicles  makes a very interesting audio-book in which they have many adventures that you’ll never be able to guess because of the way they tell the story.  The story is about a kid who always got into trouble in school, and one day they move into a very old house where their aunt lets them stay.  The three kids (Mallory, Jared, and Simon) like to explore the house where Jared finds a book of many creatures. But, as he reads the book, it leads him into trouble and into more adventures with his sister and brother.  One of the creatures is an ogre which tries to take over the land of magical and real worlds but the main question is if he succeeds! – The Spiderwick Chronicles: Books 1-5

My son Daniel is the typical eleven-year-old of his generation. He loves stories, but is not necessarily interested in reading books. My recommendation to parents of reluctant readers is to offer audio-books as occassional alternatives. These bait the reading hook, so to speak, and if the student has the hard copy he or she can read along. Because they are reading along, you can actually choose material that is above their normal reading level and give them an extra challenge. To establish a love of reading sometmes it is necessary to meet kids where they are rather than get them to conform to what you want them to be. As for Daniel and me, we can’t wait to see the movie!
